Slovakia distinguishes prescription medicines from over-the-counter (voľnopredajné) medicines. Non-prescription medicines may be offered without a prescription, and even they carry authorised indications, doses and warnings. Advertising is permitted for non-prescription medicines but not for prescription medicines.
Prescription status, health-insurance reimbursement and the type of prescription are separate matters. The pharmacist checks the prescription, safe use and any substitution rules. Some medicines require prescriptions under special control.
Ask about the exact medicine and its current classification. A product sold without prescription abroad may have different conditions in Slovakia.
