Polish pharmacy developed through monastery medicine, medieval town apothecaries and the scientific traditions of major university centres. Kraków, Gdańsk, Warsaw and other cities linked local practice with wider European trade in medicinal substances.

Education and regulation

Professional examinations, pharmacopoeias and university teaching gradually transformed pharmacy from a guild craft into a health science. Industrial medicine production changed dispensing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, while compounding and patient advice remained core responsibilities.

Today pharmacies operate within national medicines law and the public reimbursement system. The pharmaceutical self-government and university faculties continue a long tradition of professional education and public service.
